IWB Carry Comfort Guide | Tips for All-Day Concealed Carry

IWB Carry Comfort Guide

Inside-the-waistband carry is popular because it conceals well and keeps the gun accessible.

But most people quit IWB carry because of discomfort: hot spots, digging, and printing.

This guide shows you how to make IWB carry comfortable for long days.

Why IWB Feels Uncomfortable (And How to Fix It)

Most discomfort comes from:

  • Wrong holster position for your body
  • Belt too tight or too loose
  • No adjustability in cant or ride height
  • Muzzle length mismatch

Small tweaks fix most problems.

Start With a Quality Gun Belt

A flimsy belt causes:

  • Holster sagging throughout the day
  • Gun shifting position
  • Belt rolling or bunching

Solution: Use a rigid gun belt 1.5" to 1.75" wide. The belt should be tight enough to support the gun without cutting into your waist.

Adjust Ride Height

Ride height controls where the holster sits on your belt.

Too high: Grip digs into ribs or prints badly.
Too low: Muzzle presses into thigh or groin when seated.

Solution: Start in the middle position. Adjust up if the muzzle digs when you sit. Adjust down if the grip prints or feels awkward.

Adjust Cant (Forward or Reverse Angle)

Cant is the forward or backward tilt of the holster.

Forward cant (grip tilts back): Reduces printing. Better for larger midsections. Can cause muzzle to dig when seated.

Neutral cant (straight up and down): Balanced comfort and concealment.

Reverse cant (grip tilts forward): Faster draw. Can increase printing under tight shirts.

Solution: Test sitting and standing. Adjust cant until the muzzle and grip both feel neutral.

Add a Wedge

A wedge is a foam or rubber pad attached to the bottom of the holster.

What it does: Pushes the muzzle into your body, which pulls the grip in and reduces printing.

When to use it: If the grip flares away from your body or you feel muzzle pressure when seated.

Solution: Start without a wedge. Add one if needed after testing.

Body-Type Specific Tips

For slim or athletic builds:

  • Use a stiff gun belt to prevent 'hula hoop' effect
  • Raise ride height slightly
  • Add wedge to pull muzzle in without pressing on hip bones

For larger midsections:

  • Cant forward slightly to reduce grip printing
  • Use wedge to control muzzle when seated
  • Consider slightly longer holster to spread pressure

For women:

  • Test multiple carry positions (12 to 4 o'clock)
  • Choose clips that work with thinner belts or belt loops
  • Avoid overly tight clothing that highlights grip outline

Test While Sitting

Most IWB discomfort shows up when you sit.

Test:

  • Sitting in a car for 20+ minutes
  • Sitting at a desk
  • Bending forward to tie shoes

If you feel sharp pressure, adjust cant or add a wedge.

Give It Time

Your body adapts to IWB carry over the first week.

Small pressure points may feel more noticeable at first. After a few days of consistent wear, most people stop noticing the holster.

If discomfort persists after a week, make further adjustments or try a different carry position.
